Emerald Student attends Ministerial Student Advisory Council

Emerald State High School captain Shuvandi Pretorious has shared her thoughts on a range of

education matters at the recent Ministerial Student Advisory Council (MSAC).

Member for Gregory Sean Dillon said the council provided students from all Queensland education

sectors with the opportunity to speak directly with the Minister for Education and the Arts.

Guidance from MSAC has translated into actionable items for the Department of Education and has

been cited in previous Parliamentary Estimates Committee hearings.

“Students worked together with leaders from the Department of Education on current issues, as

selected by the students themselves,” Mr Dillon said.

“Topics under discussion included digital world, artificial intelligence, active citizenship and Olympics and Paralympics 2032.

“The students then presented to the Minister for Education John-Paul Langbroek, who was very

impressed by their engagement and enthusiasm to contribute to community.

“The students later had the opportunity to interact with media, with some interviews broadcast on

the news that evening.

“Shuvandi is to be congratulated on her selection to MSAC and for representing our region so well.”

The MSAC provides advice, feedback and shares views on critical and emerging issues for

Queensland school students; considers expert presentations and provides advice on implications for

Queensland students; provides suggestions on current strategies and possible future actions to

address emerging issues and provides student views on current and future policy and practice.

It is chaired by the Minister for Education and the Arts and consists of a group of 18 students from

state and non-state schools across Queensland.

Members are selected through the Department of Education’s regional nomination process with two

students chosen to represent each region.
